I think a double reed duck call is the best to start out with. They are easier to use, forgive more mistakes, and can take a lot of spit that flows through the call especially with beginners. My dad squawks or squeals all the time when he calls. I had an RNT old style double reed in hedge that I thought would work for him. I was right. It's the only call I let him use and he does not squawk much any more (he's still too loud!). I started out learning with a big old wood call my dad had then I got a Haydel's DR-85 at my first calling contest. Those are really good for beginners because they work even though there may be a lot of spit going through. Visit my website www.icallducks.com for some duck sounds to practice with.
